Deadspin links to The Seal Clubbers blog with this story about an ex-high school basketball coach at Monument Academy in Colorado whose motivational techniques included swift, hard punches to the nuts.
I’m not quite sure what to make of this news.
On the one hand, it is further proof that the idea of “Rochambeau Rule” has touched others in their bathing suit areas and that it is really, only a matter of time before the NBA (or Bobby Knight) takes notice.
On the other hand, it’s a pretty horrible thing for a coach to prepare his players for the Rochambeau Rule before it has even been adopted by the NBA competition committee. And considering players can no longer be drafted out of high school, it’s just cruel and unusual.
In arrest records, some of the victims portrayed the incidents as Burr’s misguided attempts at humor but said they kept quite [sic.] for fear of getting kicked off the team. One student estimated some of the players were hit in the groin 30-40 times.
Object lesson, kiddies: if your coach smacks you in nuts, do whatever it takes to get your ass kicked off the team. I’d totally understand wanting to stay on the team IF the Rochambeau Rule was in place. Hell, I would have stuck around too. Are you kidding me? Burr’s training techniques would have made me the next Michael Jordan. I’d have cojones del hierro.
Oh, and that “humor”?
A student in documents said Burr would ask them, “What is the capital of Thailand?” When they would answer “Bangkok,” he would hit them in the groin.
As Abba and Murray Head warned us in thier paean to the spiritual purity of chess:
One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble
Can’t be too careful with your company
I can feel the devil walking next to me
