On my run yesterday at the gym, I tuned to Comedy Central on my treadmill TV which was showing a repeat of The Chappelle show, the episode featuring the 2004 World Series of Dice. I had seen it before - and laughed heartily - so I thought I was safe from the charms of Ashy Larry.

I was wrong.

There I was running at a pretty good cardiovascular clip - about 8 miles per hour - and they introduce Ashy Larry. He snarls, strikes his poses and ashes (for those who have seen it, you know what I’m talking about) and I started laughing. Really bad.

Then Chappelle, as Leonard Washington, says, “What you need is some chapstick and a pair of trousers.”

Belly rolls. Like it was the first time I had seen it. Two thoughts passed through my mind:

  1. It was crowded at the gym with a gaggle of kids waiting to use the treadmill. I felt their gaze falling upon me and looking at me as if I had gone mad. Who laughs this hard while running? They must think I’m nuts. If only they could share what’s going on inside my head…
  2. Holy shit, I’m stumbling. I’m going to fall, bust my ass and eat this treadmill something horrible if I don’t stop laughing.

I tried to pull myself together, stifling any laughs into a chuckle. I ended up having to stop at two miles with side stitch.

The moral of the story is you shouldn’t watch The Chappelle show at gym. It may seem like a fine idea but like drinking and dialing, high levels of physical or cardiovascular exertion and high levels of laughter just don’t mix. You’ll likely just hurt and embarrass yourself.

But since you’re here and not at the gym, here’s the clip for your [safe] enjoyment:
