As a wee tot, I used to do this thing where I would close my eyes really tight for a piece of watermelon.  It was a parlor trick that my parents had me do to entertain our visiting relatives.
Today at the eye doctor, during my contact lens fitting training session, as I struggled for about 5 minutes to place the thin piece of corrective lens directly on my eyeball, the optician/lab tech kept saying, “you have such small eyes.”

Yes, it’s true, I am Asian and therefore have slant-eye syndrome (SES), but millions of Asians wear contacts. I wasn’t having trouble because my eyes are small; I was having trouble because I was putting a foreign object into my eye.

Everytime I got close and failed, she said, “Your eyes are so small, just open them wider.”  Another failed or aborted attempt, “God, your eyes are so small.”

Magically, after about 10 more minutes of near hits, I finally got them in. Before she allowed me to leave with my small eyes, she wanted me to prove to her that I could get them out, which just made for more humilation because it was such a to-do just to get them into my small, little eyes in the first place.

So again, as I struggled, she kept saying, “Your eyes are so small, you have to pull them open wider so you have more room.”

I finally got them out and though I don’t think I was insulted - and certainly not a time to get angry - I left the eye doctor feeling just a little bit like the optician had just spent the last hour taunting me by pulling on the sides of her big eyes, transforming them into two little sideways coin slots on her face.
