Been a busy weekend, here’s a quick powerpoint-style recap:
- Mikey Milan was visiting from the farm and for the big city experience, we took him to:
- Normans for Pig and Paella night. Everything they say about Norman’s Pig and Paella night is true. Go there on Friday. Eat pork. Be happy. We got a nice seat next to the open kitchen and I was reminded of the days I worked the hot pass.
- Nikki Nagasaki’s birthday party at the commune. It was like Burning Man: a whole lotta fuzz…er fur. Mikey Milan said, “this is interesting.”
- A party for incoming students at the home of one of Mary Milan’s colleagues and dang this colleague has a nice home…actually “nice” denigrates the quality of the place, more like, a home that you might see on Cribs or The Fabulous Life of… It totally weirds me out when someone in your peer group far exceeds the accepted living standards for everybody in the peer group. Mmm. Haterade!
- A screening of The Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela, a documentary that Shirley Massachusetts served as an associate producer on. It’s good and worth seeing. Thomas Allen Harris uses an interesting blend of dramatic recreations which I was initially suspicious of because it’s more of the domain of America’s Most Wanted than a socially conscious documentary about twelve South African exiles in the anti-aparteid struggle but in the film it all works beautifully. I credit Shirley Massachusetts.
- And finally, we repaid Mikey Milan for bringing all of the yummy Midwestern treats to us with a visit to FatBurger.
- What price glory? While it’s been great getting linked to by Deadspin and Defamer, it’s caused trouble elsewhere:
- DDCLF and Donnie DC think I misattributed their quotes in the SBXL live blog. It’s not that I misattribute; I smooth out the narrative. For example, DDCLF and I didn’t actually have a discussion about Saussure and semiotics during the Burger King “Busby Berkeley”commercial, but wouldn’t it be cool if we did? And in regards to the Dove Real Beauty Campaign, Donnie DC’s comment was preceeded by DDCLF saying, “I don’t agree with that.”
- Mary Milan spent the weekend running around the house acting like a primadonna because her comment about Sly Stone looking like a Gremlin got us linked by Defamer. She lounged all weekend, demanding that I fan and feed her grapes while she cogitated on another “nugget of truth for humanity.” As I fed and fanned, I reminded her that I was the one who said, “Dammit, who fed Sly Stone after midnight?” and “misattributed” it to her. We had a fight about it. Yes. We are small, petty people.
